The village of Christian Arabs Kormacit!
Before ending your Cyprus holiday, you should definitely visit the Maronit village, one of the most striking villages of the island. The village, formerly known as Kormacit/Kormachit and new name Koruçam, is only 35 km from Kyrenia.
What makes this village special is its authentic atmosphere, historical texture and villagers. Maronites, many years ago, because of religious and political events in the Middle Ages, they singled out their country and lands, and they called Cyprus their home. Maranites, who did not adopt some of the decisions taken in the Council in the 5th century and were excluded, were subjected to oppression and hid in the mountains of Lebanon. At that time, some of the Maronites, each of whom went to another place, decided to go to Cyprus. Maronites, who are Christian and Arab, are as attached to their traditions as they were centuries ago. Until 1974, there were four Maronite villages in Cyprus.
They named their village 'Koura-Macisi' to express their longing for their town in Lebanon, where they came from a settlement called 'Koura' in Lebanon. Over time this changed to "Kormachit". It was also used until 1974. Kouramacisi means "I come from Koura, but my land did not come with me"
When you go to the village, you will encounter the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin. The statues of the Virgin Mary, the Prophet Jesus and the Saint Marun, considered sacred by the Maronites, and the chapel are located side by side.
Located in the village square of St. George's Church fascinates everyone. At the entrance of the church, which has two bell towers, St. George, after whom the church is named, is seen killing a dragon with his spear in his hand. The church is only open during mass. Very close to the church, there is the Maronite Church and it is even older than the George Church.
Before 1974, approximately three thousand people lived in Koruçam, a large village. Today, about 100 people live in the village. Young Maronites preferred to live in the south of the island and the population of the village decreased.
The biggest feature of the inhabitants of this village is that they are not Greek or Orthodox. they are Catholics. They are Christians, but they are Arabs and speak Greek. Since their holy books are in Arabic, they pray in Arabic.
The most popular name of the village is Maria, who owns a restaurant in the village. Maria, the owner of Yorgo Restaurant-Kasap, is famous for the famous oven kebab of Cyprus. Maria, whose mother is a Native American Indian, is famous throughout the island. Traditional Cypriot delicacies await you at Maria's restaurant, where you can find traditional delicacies.
